Shocks in Driven Liquid Films

چکیده

The study of driven liquid films dates back several decades. There is a well-known lubrication analysis for thin liquid films driven by surface tension, surface stresses, and body forces. The result is a mathematical model, in the form of a PDE, consisting of a conservation law for the film thickness with higher order terms modeling effects such as surface tension. This abstract considers the model discussed in [1], for films driven by a thermal gradient with an opposing gravitational force. The depth averaged velocity is

Meniscus solutions and shock dynamics for Marangoni-driven flows Submitted for Presentation in ECS2005 The European Coating Symposium 2005

We consider a situation where a thin liquid film is driven from a reservoir up a substrate by a thermally induced Marangoni shear stress and investigate the meniscus that connects the film with the reservoir, as well as the wave dynamics near the contact-line. We identify two types of meniscus solutions, and show, via a phase space investigation of the third order ODE that governs the profile, ...

Thin film dynamics: theory and applications

This paper is based on a series of four lectures, by the first author, on thin films and moving contact lines. Section one presents an overview of the moving contact line problem and introduces the lubrication approximation. Section two summarizes results for positivity preserving schemes. Section three discusses the problem of films driven by thermal gradients with an opposing gravitational fo...

Irreversibility Analysis of MHD Buoyancy-Driven Variable Viscosity Liquid Film along an Inclined Heated Plate Convective Cooling

Analysis of intrinsic irreversibility and heat transfer in a buoyancy-driven changeable viscosity liquid along an incline heated wall with convective cooling taking into consideration the heated isothermal and isoflux wall is investigated. By Newton’s law of cooling, we assumed the free surface exchange heat with environment and fluid viscosity is exponentially dependent on temperature. Appropr...

Theory for shock dynamics in particle-laden thin films.

We present a theory to explain the emergence of a particle-rich ridge observed experimentally in a thin film particle-laden flow on an incline. We derive a lubrication theory for this system which is qualitatively compared to preliminary experimental data. The ridge formation arises from the creation of two shocks due to the differential transport rates of fluid and particles. This parallels re...
